With any protective wear you must check and make sure that the fitting is correct and the horse riding hat is of British Safety Standard for the purpose it is intended, the following will give you an idea of what to look for when purchasing a hat. British Standards include; EN 1384: 1996, BSEN 1384:1997, PAS 015 1998, ASTM F1163, or a higher standard such as Snell E2001 or BSEN 14572:2005. The Kite Mark is very important because it shows that the hat meets the required standard including design approval. If for some unfortunate reason your hat suffers a severe impact – even accidentally dropping onto a hard surface, it should be disposed of and a new hat should be purchased, as the damage is not always visible from the outside.

When trying to decide which hat to buy, it really depends on what you will be using it for, whether you want a velvet hat for showing, dressage, showjumping or a skull cap for cross country, eventing or hacking. There is also a choice of flesh or black leather harnesses on the velvet hats or a nylon harness. For in-hand showing you may require a beagler cap which has no protective standards or harness but is acceptable for in-hand showing and hunting.
